This guidebook begins with no less than sixteen self-guided discovery tours of San Francisco itself, some by car and others that combine walking with cable cars, ferries and local buses. The areas within the city include the Waterfront, Chinatown, Civic Center, Urban Hills, Presidio, Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks, Haight-Ashbury, Castro, as well as Alcatraz and Angel Islands. There are plenty of unusual shopping opportunities, as well as historic sites, museums, ethnic neighborhoods and glorious views.

Included here are nine one day excursions north of the city to Sausalito, Tiburon, Muir Woods, Napa, Sonoma and more - to enjoy both the wines and the rugged scenery. Daytrips east of the city include easy rides to Berkeley, Oakland, the Bay islands, Sacramento, Gold Rush country and Yosemite Park. Heading south of the city, the guide visits Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay, San Jose, Silicon Valley, and Santa Cruz. Overnights are included at Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur.
